My Thoughts on the Books I Read!

I had always thought Darwinism was based on the principle of “survival of the fittest”, which I understood as the strongest or best-adapted surviving. Dawkins explains it slightly differently. It is not necessarily about being the strongest or healthiest, but about which genes are most successful at getting passed on to future generations. Sometimes this can even explain why animals behave selflessly or sacrifice themselves for others. An interesting distinction that changed how I looked at evolution.

Very interesting book, and I learnt a lot from it. The ESS (Evolutionarily Stable Strategy) theory was especially interesting to read about. It explains why certain behaviours become stable and why being aggressive or selfish is not always the best strategy. Cooperation can sometimes be more beneficial than competition, even when the underlying process is driven by selfish genes. Of course, the examples from the animal kingdom that he uses are mostly those that agree with his claims, but still, it is an interesting way to look at things.

It would be interesting to read a book that counters his ideas and understand why. He has quoted enough material from authors and scientists who disagree with him and tries to justify why he sees it differently. Most of it is convincing, but I think it would be interesting to read a book based on a counter idea.

I liked the chapter on memes, and I must say I agree with a lot of it. I will definitely be quoting it to explain my views on religion and why I am against much of it. The idea of religion, beliefs and ideas can spread from one person to another, not necessarily because they are true, but because they are good at being passed on.

Definitely recommend reading it!
