Deep Work - Rules for Focused Success in a Distracted World

Every time I reach for my phone and mindlessly scroll through YouTube or Facebook reels, I am aware that I am dulling my brain and potentially causing harm through this form of entertainment. Nevertheless, I find myself unable to break this habit. I might resist for a week, but I invariably return to it, likely because it’s such a convenient and effortless activity.

In listening to Cal Newport’s “Deep Work,” he delves into these issues and offers recommendations for addressing them if one chooses to do so. I appreciate the techniques and suggestions in the book, but whether they will be as effective for me as they were for Cal and others remains uncertain. I do hope it works.

When I came across a snippet of an interview with Yuval Noah Harari on YouTube, where he discusses the drawbacks of AI and how it would render people ineffective and their jobs obsolete in the future, it greatly annoyed me. As a technophile, I thought to myself, “Here is another celebrity making a fuss about something he doesn’t comprehend.” I felt he was underestimating the magnitude of our achievements and being shortsighted regarding what Large Language Models could mean for the world as a whole.
